Environmentally Friendly and Sustainable Roofing

The great side about roofing is that there are many difference eco-friendly roof options. A sustainable material is produced without causing significant or irreparable damage to the earth. Roofing material that uses fossil fuels or mined materials are not sustainable. To help you decide what roofing option is best for your home or business here are a few options:

1. MALARKEY'S NEX® POLYMER MODIFIED ASPHALT TECHNOLOGY

Want a roof that has up-cycled materials? Malarkey has designed shingles that are made of Automobile tires and plastic bottles. By incorporating used tires, as well as post-consumer hard plastics, not only are their shingles more environmentally friendly by recycling these products. Each roof diverts the equivalent of 5 rubber tires and 350 plastic milk jugs from the landfill!

2. MALARKEY'S SMOG-REDUCING SHINGLE

All Malarkey architectural and designer shingles include 3M™ Smog-Reducing Granules. These granules contain a photocatalytic coating which, when activated by the UV rays of the sun, creates the energy needed to break apart airborne water molecules (ex. humidity) into their component parts. The newly formed molecule called a hydroxyl radical, binds to smog molecules, chemically transforming them from a dangerous, inhalable gas into a water-soluble nitrate salt solid, a more plant-usable form of nitrogen that is deposited on the roof and washes away with rainwater.

Each roof has the smog-fighting potential of 2 or more trees! Trees are nature’s filters. Not only do they clean particulates out of the air by trapping them on leaves and bark, they also absorb pollutant gases like nitrogen oxides through leaf stomata. Stomata are small windows on green leaves that let carbon dioxide and other gaseous pollutants in and oxygen out. Like trees, Malarkey shingles also help fight air pollution by incorporating 3M™ Smog-Reducing Granules which convert smog gases into water soluble ions that settle on the roof and wash away with rainwater.

3. SOLAR REFLECTIVE SHINGLES- CERTAINTEED CORPORATION

Solar reflective shingles and solar reflective roofing membranes can be an important component in a building system designed to reduce overall building energy consumption and the impact the home or building has on the environment.

Solar reflective shingles are defined as having surfaces that primarily reflect considerably more IR radiation than normal roof surfaces. Infrared radiation is a spectrum of light that generates significant amounts of heat on roof surfaces. Solar reflective shingles are designed specifically to reduce the absorption of the suns infrared radiation by reflecting IR rays off the surface of the roof thus not allowing the heat to be transferred to the interior of the structure (i.e. the attic under the roof). By reducing the amount of this heat transfer, solar reflective shingles and solar reflective roofs in general have the ability to keep building interiors cooler, thus lessening the usage and strain on HVAC equipment particularly in warmer climates and in summer months.

In addition to the potential energy saving benefits that solar reflective shingles can have for a building, research on the degradation of roofing membranes over a number of years have shown that heat from the sun is one of the most potent factors impacting durability. High temperatures and large variations; seasonally or daily, at the roofing level are detrimental to the longevity of roof surfaces. Reducing the extremes of temperature change will reduce the incidence of damage to roofing systems. Using solar reflective shingles and solar reflective roofing products that reflect ultraviolet and primarily infrared radiation will reduce damage caused by u/v and heat degradation.

CertainTeed Corporation has several solar reflective shingles to choose from in various style and color options to suit a range of different home styles and elevations.

The Landmark Solaris series, featuring Landmark Solaris®, Landmark Solaris® Gold and Landmark Solaris® Platinum, is available in several popular ENERGY STAR® rated color options, which are virtually indistinguishable from the CertainTeed Landmark shingle that has recently been rated a consumer “best buy” from a highly respected consumer publication. The Landmark Solaris® Platinum solar reflective shingles represent an industry breakthrough in technology achieving a level of 40% solar reflectivity.

4. LIVING ROOFS (GREEN ROOFS)

GO GREEN! Living roofs have many purposes such as improving and reducing engergy consumption, insulate buildings and blocks sound, reduce stormwater runoff, creating a space for wild life (bees, butterflies and song birds), increase agricultural space, and lower air temperatures. Change your the look of your home or business with a living roof! These rooftops provide a natural function and is pleasing to the eye.
